Congrats on the weight loss, Ladies! I have long term goals. *snort* I'm not going to vigorously change things until after the Holidays, but I've been actively cutting out sugar for over a week now. I've given myself "outs" for Thanksgiving day and Christmas day... lol. Gotta have pie and cookies, for heaven sakes! But I already feel like I have more energy. And it gets easier every day to say no to certain things.

Congrats, Cheryl and Kate, on your weight loss! I'm working on it, but haven't been on a scale lately. And Lori, I admire the sugar thing. I simply cannot do it. I'm WEAK!

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Since I have been on vacation I have been catching up on my TV watching. The past week I have been watching The View every morning and I gotta say that Elizabeth Hasselbeck just gets on my last nerve!! She is the most narrow minded woman I have ever seen!! I don't even like to see her onscreen, what an idiot!

Can't stand EH, either. I don't think she actually thinks on her own, it's just a bunch of pre-formulated comments that she feels compelled to spew. But the View in general gives me a headache most of the time. lol

Well, I'm paying bills (yay?) and sort of watching GH. Monica sighting today! In honor of Emily, of course. I swear that girl is the most popular dead character I've ever seen on a soap. If Natty only got paid every time her dead alter got mentioned - she'd be a rich woman!

Beth said...

EH is of the devil. And I'll leave it at that. :)

I watch GH today too Lori. Is it just me or does poor Mac need someone to tell him that he needs a new hairpiece? I love the guy but wow..the one he has sucks!
LOL

Okay, I need to get this out. Have patience with me, this might go long.

(Oh, and I apologize for this being again about GH. I'm trying to wean off, but it's going to take a little time. ;))

I was over at another board reading a post about how the poster is tired of Nikolas constantly being measured by the character he was with Emily. I suppose it's a valid argument, but it's also from someone who pretty much likes whoever Nik's with at any given time and has no loyalty to any one pairing. However, for some reason it stuck with me, and here's my thoughts.

Isn't what part of what makes us who we are at any given time even partially defined by the people who come in and out of our lives, even fictional characters? For example, without Cathy, Heathcliff would be some pouty character whining on the moors for no reason whatsoever, instead of the romantic hero he's considered to be. Yes, Nikolas was on the show for years before his relationship with Emily blossomed, but heck, he was best friends with her. She defined him in ways before she became the love of his life.

Emily's Nikolas was a better person, IMO. Emily's Nikolas could be ruthless and selfish, but for usually altruistic reasons. Emily's Nikolas actually FELT things, rather than treat everything with the seeming indifference he seems to exude these days. Emily's Nikolas would have gone to her grave and honestly mourned her on Friday, rather than turn his visit into a whinefest about his life and how she wouldn't like him right now and how he wants to get into Liz's pants. (I honestly wanted a hand to reach out of that crypt and slap the shit out of him.)

And hey, if you don't want Nikolas to be defined by Emily, then let's look at another couple of people who had a great influence on him. First up, his mother. Laura's Nikolas has a heart and mind and thinks before he does. Laura's Nikolas knows he's a better person than his family and would take steps to prevent that, rather than wallowing in it and using it as an excuse. What did Emily tell him once? That he had Cassadine blood, but it flowed through Laura's heart? And Laura would be heartbroken to know that he is knowingly and uncaringly throwing his brother's feelings aside, especially after all the efforts Nik and Lucky made to have the Spencer/Cassadine feud end with them. I remember them on the docks together pledging that, as a matter of fact. Laura's Nikolas would remember that and know that those bonds are stronger than getting into the pants of a woman who waffles more than your average IHOP.

And how about Stefan to Nikolas? Stefan's one redeeming quality was that he loved Nikolas unselfishly and in fact literally died to protect him, no matter what Guza wants the audience to believe. He was ruthless and nasty, but he gave Nikolas everything and was a true father. And while he probably wouldn't be too bummed about the Liz thing (lol), I bet he'd have plenty to say about the way Nik conducts himself as a father. (Thank the Soap Gods that kid isn't Emily's. I would be apoplectic at this point.)

In conclusion, Nikolas is all of these things, and I see very very little of him in what's onscreen right now. That falls to Guza, because he constantly tailors characterization to fit plot point, which is one of the many things that makes him a lousy writer. Emily's Nik, Laura's Nik, and Stefan's Nik would take the current Nik out back and beat the crap out of him for being such a d-bag. So forgive me for living in the past, but I'll take Emily's Nikolas any day over this stranger standing in front of me.

Oh, and one last thing - the crypt scenes on Friday made me ill. Lucky was the only one there who actually came to mourn Em. The other two were there to tell the love of their life/best friend that they want to bang each other. I think I sat there and yelled at my TV for 20 minutes straight.

Cheryl congrads to you. I have been going to the gym although now that I'm back at work it's a bit harder. Keep up your great work.

The View. I can't watch those cackling hens. Whoppi Goldberg like Meredith Viera was is really the only person tolerable on that show.

Beth don't apologize. I go through moments about being content and ready for closure and moments like you've had.

Beth..I read the same post as you. I wanted so bad comment there but I knew it would not be well received. My thoughts ran along the same vain as yours. Emily and Nikolas are like Luke and Laura, the couple really makes the character. Thanks so much for your post, I loved it!!

How can anyone not think Nikolas is defined by Emily? It's the same as him being defined by Laura and Stefan. Emily was so defined by Nikolas they got rid of the actress twice now. SO I wish people would GMAFB about crying about Nikolas.

The actor's still working and get's decent screentime for a nonmobbie. People don't like how they write him and don't like the fact that viewers of this show only want him with Emily, blame the writers versus complaining about the viewers being unable to accept him with someone else. They wrote NEm larger than life, they wrote them romantic(not sleazy), in love, and sensual. Viewers bought into their love story because the writing and actors sold it. I personally get tired of people blaming the viewers who are unable to accept something about a character when it is entirely the fault of the writers. Hell if the writers had an ounce of creativity, both Emily and Nikolas could be alive and well on GH in other relationships(see Sonny and Carly). Instead we get an Emily lookalike and the actress again off the show

Kate said...

Cheryl not only were NEm huge but people bitch about Luke and Laura and how TG wants Luke to move on but maybe TG also has a point. Viewers won't let Luke move on. But I'll say again, they would if the writers could write a compelling story.

I didn't read the post, B, but I don't really get the bitching, period. Why should anyone complain when soap fans/viewers want BETTER for a character than what is being written? I don't care who they are with or what they are doing. Doesn't everyone want the best story, the best romance, the best everything for that character?

I mean, look, I LOVED Nikolas back in the day. I loved him before he was in NEM. Yes, I became a huge fan during the early years of the NEm pairing, but that was because he was written with such complexity and care. I cared about him based on the show's ability to bring me to a place where I would naturally WANT to care. Emily or not. I truly loved Nikolas back then.
He was damaged without being damaging, he was dark without being a black hole, he was romantic and conflicted for reasons that went beyond his weenie. He wasn't a whiner - he was sexily stoic. But mostly he was a gentleman.
So should Emily get the credit for him being romantic and sexy and dynamic and heroic and interesting? I didn't used to think so. The writing just made it so.
Just like the writing makes him vile and one dimensional NOW. It has little to do with who he's with or what he's "defined" by. Fans will respond to writing that doesn't suck and characters who have heart and believable motivations. And it takes more than plot points to achieve that.

I know Nik fan first are reeling and trying to find ways to justify their fave's behavior these days. But blaming DeadEmily or the ghost of NEm for the fact that these days Nikolas is a shell of his former awesomeness is pretty weak. Blame the shitty writing.

Hell it's the writers who keep throwing the Emily card in there even though shes dead not the viewers and why. It's to give Nik and Liz some sympathy and rooting value. Why else. We can't help it if they need a character who was beloved and has been dead for 2 years to do it. Blame the writers.

Well convinced by Diana, I joined Natalia's fan club. It was only 20 dollars and I figured it's probably the only way I have have to keep updated on her activities once she's off the show for good. I will supposedly get a bunch of pictures of Natalia as part of this. In the end who knows if it will bw worth it or not.

Lori said...

The Emily card gets played way too much, if you ask me. NEM fans aren't holding a gun to the writer's heads making them mention her at every turn, either. If they truly want to move him on - legitimately - then what are they waiting for? Clean him the f*ck up and make him a romantic lead worth rooting for again. And for Pete's sake, stop using Emily as Nik's excuse for being craptastic - 2 YEARS after she died. Get over it, already. I'm pretty sure her fans have.

Emily is Nikolas's reason for his downward spiral. Really. 2 years later. It's beyond old now and I say that as an Emily fan. She's dead let it go.
